Nikolai Alekseevich Ushin (1898, St. Petersburg - April 6, 1942, Leningrad) - soviet theater artist and book schedule. Brother graphic artist Alexei Ushin.
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts under P. A. Shillingovsky (1923-1928). In the 1920s - 1930s he created a design for theatrical productions. He developed for himself a little pretentious (so-called «Ushinsky») style of conveying images of the revolution, creatively reworking the motifs of medieval Russian painting and Palekh lacquer miniature.
Created bookplates and lithographs. Working at the Academia publishing house, he executed the decoration of the eight fairy tale book «Tales of 1001 Nights» and received the Gold Medal of the Paris exhibition of 1937 for this work. Another well-known artist’s work for the Academia publishing house was the design of the book «Lemuel Gulliver's Travels» (binding, dust jacket and bookend), published in 1928.
Works of the artist are in many museums of St. Petersburg.
It is known that Nikolai Ushin was friends with the famous singer N. K. Pechkovsky and repeatedly visited his dacha in Kartashevskaya.
Known is one of Ushin's film poster, created by him in 1922 - to the lost silent film «Father Seraphim».
He died of starvation on April 6, 1942 in besieged Leningrad during the Great Patriotic War. He was buried at Piskaryovsky cemetery.
