In the French army, in addition to regimental and battalion trumpeters and drummers who served as signalers, much wider than in the Russian army, used regimental bands equipped with all kinds of musical instruments then known in Europe. These orchestras usually consisted not of children of soldiers, but of professional musicians recruited for money or drafted into the recruitment service.
