Augereau was brave, stubborn, and steadfast, and it was difficult to «knock him out of the saddle». He was famous as a capable tactician and an excellent soldier, very popular in the army. His way as a military leader was not as bright and brilliant as that of some marshals of the First Empire. He gained his main fame as a military leader in Italy in 1796-97, when, by his actions, he helped the young Bonaparte to gain fame and glory by amazing victories over the enemy. Already, being on top of power, Napoleon never forgot those people, thanks to whose services he acquired the first laurels and whose unsurpassed courage and perseverance contributed to the unprecedented success of his first campaigns. The number of such people, of course, includes Ogereau. In one of his reports to the Directory, Bonaparte enthusiastically calls him «the brave Augereau». Under Lodi, Castiglione and Arcole, the “brave Augereau” won the right to wear the ducal title and marshal's baton.
