Frolov Sergei Kuzmich (1924-1998) - Soviet painter, graphic artist, teacher, Member of the Leningrad organization of the Union of Artists of the RSFSR (1956), member of the St. Petersburg Union of Artists. Frolov Sergei Kuzmich was born on September 26, 1924 in the village of Baklanka, Vologda province, into a peasant family, where, in addition to him, there were four older children. After the family moved to Petrozavodsk in 1931, he studied in 1937-1941 in the art studio of the local Palace of Pioneers. In 1942 he was drafted into the army and sent to the Veliko-Ustyug Infantry School. He took part in battles on the Central and 1st Belorussian fronts, and in particular, in the Orel-Kursk battle. Was injured. He was awarded the medal «For Victory over Germany», the Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd degree. Demobilized in early 1947 with the rank of sergeant. In 1947, Sergei Frolov entered the Faculty of Ceramics of the Leningrad Higher School of Industrial Art named after V.I.Mukhina. He was engaged in painting and drawing with Pyotr Buchkin, Alexander Lyubimov, Konstantin Belokurov, Ivan Stepashkin.
In 1952, Frolov graduated from the V.I.Mukhina Higher School of Industrial Art in the workshop of Anatoly Kazantsev. He was left to teach at the department of general painting of the school, where he taught mainly watercolors. From 1965 to 1975 he taught at the Department of Drawing. Participated in exhibitions since 1952, exhibiting his works together with the works of the leading masters of the visual arts of Leningrad. He painted landscape and architectural landscapes, portraits, genre compositions. He worked in the technique of watercolor, oil painting, drawing. In 1956 he became a member of the Leningrad Union of Artists. The leading genre in the work of Sergei Frolov is a lyrical landscape, the main themes are Leningrad and its suburbs, architectural monuments of ancient Russian cities. In 1960-1970 he worked at the creative base of Leningrad artists in Staraya Ladoga, Pskov, Izborsk. Frolov's painting is distinguished by delicate watercolor writing, sophistication of tonal relationships, masterful use of plein air, and poetic perception of nature. The color is soft, slightly muted, with a predominance of green, yellow and purple tones.
Among the works created by Frolov in easel painting and watercolors are the works «Girl», «Pines», «Winter» (all 1953), «City landscape» (1954), «Pond. Pushkin Hills», «Autumn. At Sunset» (both 1955), «Yalta Embankment» (1956), «Pskov. Tower», «Pskov Kremlin», «Phlox», «Yalta Port», «Isaakievskaya Square», «Strelna» (all 1957), «Rybachiy Settlement», «Severnaya Derevnya» (both 1958), «April», «Evening» (both 1959), «Admiralty», «Anichkov Bridge» (both 1960), «In Staraya Ladoga» (1961), «Admiralty», «Bastion of the Peter and Paul Fortress» (both 1964), «Palace Square», «Twilight», «Bad weather» (all 1968), «Late evening» (1971), «At the edge» (1972), «Evening. Belozersk» (1975), «Early Autumn» (1976), «Old Russian Town» (1977), «Blue House» (1981) and others. Personal exhibitions of works by Sergei Frolov were shown in 1964 and 1990 in the Pushkin Museum-Reserve and in 1972 and 1987 in Leningrad in the exhibition halls of the Leningrad Union of Artists. Perfectly mastering the technique of watercolor painting, Frolov created a panoramic view of the famous village of Pushkinskie Gory, having carefully worked out architectural and everyday details in detail. Exactly found color relationships convey the special lyrical mood characteristic of this famous corner of Russia. Over 60 works were donated by the artist to the museum.
