Ivan Silych Goryushkin-Sorokopudov (November 5, 1873, p. Nashchi, Tambov province - December 29, 1954, p. Ivanovka, Penza region) - Russian painter, graphic artist and teacher, Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1943). Born in the family of a soldier and a hacker Sila Vasilyevich Goryushkin, he was orphaned early. He was brought up with distant relatives (bourgeois Sorokopudovs) in Saratov. In his youth, he worked as a waiter and an auxiliary worker («a boy at the buffet») on steamboats that traveled along the Volga. Interested in drawing. On the advice of P. Ya. Pyasetsky, a famous traveler in Mongolia, China and Eastern Siberia, he entered the doctrine of P. A. Vlasov in Astrakhan (1890-1892). Together with Goryushkin studied B. Kustodiev, A. Vakhrameev, I. Elatontsev.
In 1902 he went to Petersburg to continue his studies, in 1892-1895 he studied at the drawing school of the Imperial Society for the Promotion of Arts. In 1897-1902 studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts under P.O. Kovalevsky, V.V. Mate, in the workshop of I.E. Repin (1899-1902). He studied with I. Bilibin, Kustodiev, K. Somov, I. Brodsky, F. Sychkov. Received the first prize of the Academy of Arts for the painting «Outside the Quiet Convent» (1902). Thesis «At a concert in Pavlovsk» (1902). Since 1897 he participated in exhibitions (Academy of Arts, Society for the Encouragement of Arts, «Society of Russian Watercolorists», Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia, etc.). Actively collaborated with the magazines «Niva», «Capital and Manor», etc.
The artist’s interests in the early period are historical painting, portrait, landscape («Prince at the Mass», «Woman of the Silent Tsar», «Corner of the Past», «Easter Eve», «Give alms on Holy night in old Russia», «Crying Yaroslavna»). He made illustrations to the works of Russian writers: P.I. Melnikov-Pechersky's «In the Woods» (1909), A.K. Tolstoy's «Prince of Silver» (1908-10). Left work on the Revolution of 1905-1907. - («Barricades. 1905»; «The rout of the lord's estate», 1905), «Shlisselburg prison» and its later version «Brought prisoners» (1932). Together with A. I. Vakhrameev, N. F. Petrov, D. N. Kardovsky and others, in 1906 he took part in the publication of the “Gamayun” magazine, which was banned by censorship.
Since 1908 - a teacher at the Penza Art College. He created large paintings of historical content - «Scene from the 17th century», «From century to century», «Bazaar day in the old city», «God's court», as well as works in other genres - «Portrait of V.V. Fomina», «Portrait of a wife», «Portrait of a mother» (mother of a wife, Claudia), «Portrait of actress A. N. Sobolshchikova-Samarina», «Kiss», «Portrait of Prince N. V. Mansireva», «Self-portrait», «Girl in the Sun» (all 1900-10s).
During the First World War he created canvases «The Feat of the Sisters of Mercy» (1914-1916), «They brought the prisoners!» (1916). In the post-revolutionary years, the artist actively participated in organizing the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia and the Youth Association of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia in Penza, and exhibited his works at exhibitions of these associations. He created the paintings «Group portrait of Moscow artists», «Portrait is thin. F. V. Sychkova» (1934), «Lenin and the Revolution», «Lenin on the podium», «Spring at home», «The funeral of V. I. Lenin», «Winter» (1936), «Ivanovka» (1939) other.
He was engaged in a lot of pedagogical activity. He taught at the Drawing School of the Society for the Promotion of Arts (1903–08), Penza Art College (1908–30, 1932–54). He was suspended by the Soviet authorities from teaching. Director of the Penza Art College (1942–45), Penza Art Gallery (1942–47). He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor (1943). He wrote the memoirs «Years of study at Repin» (Artistic legacy. Repin, T. 2. M. - L., 1949) and about his work in Petrograd in the 1920s. (Goryushkin-Sorokopudov I. S. Goryushkin-Sorokopudov's works are in many museums in Russia, including the State Tretyakov Gallery. The Penza Art Gallery houses over 200 of his works. He was buried in Penza at the Mitrofanovsky cemetery next to Konstantin Savitsky. The grave of I.S. Goryushkin Sorokopudov has a protected status - it has been an object of cultural heritage of regional significance since 1966. The Goryushkin-Sorokopudov Memorial Museum was created in the Penza Art Gallery (since 1986). A plaque on the building of the Penza Art School.
